Rupert Murdoch is not fit to run a major international company, MPs said on Tuesday, finding him ultimately responsible for the illegal phone hacking that has corroded his global media empire and damaged the political establishment. But it split along party lines, with members from Prime Minister David Cameron's Conservative Party voting against the report, saying they did not agree with its view that the Australian-born Murdoch was not fit to run a major company. Cameron is facing criticism ahead of local elections this week that he was too close to the media tycoon, who won government approval to take over British pay-TV operator BSkyB, before dropping the bid when the scandal broke. Pfizer Pipeline Bet to Show If Drugmaker Has Blockbuster

Pfizer Inc. (PFE) ’s Chief Executive Officer  Ian Read  will find out in the next six months whether his plan to shed units and focus on new drugs will pay off, with three top products awaiting approval or key data. U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulators will rule on Pfizer’s blood thinner and arthritis pill by June and August, respectively. The New York-based company plans to report data from the last of three phases of clinical tests on bapineuzumab, its experimental Alzheimer’s treatment, in the third quarter. In the meantime, Read is buying back shares, arguing that Pfizer’s best investment of cash is the drugmaker’s stock. “There’s always a discontinuity between what the street sees and puts in our share price for our pipeline, and what we can see in our pipeline,” Chief Financial Officer Frank D’Amelio said today in a telephone interview. RIM Releases BlackBerry Prototypes to Kick Off New Smartphone

Research In Motion Ltd. (RIM) , trying to pull out of a sales slump, moved a step closer to the debut of a new BlackBerry smartphone by releasing as many as 2,000 prototypes to developers. The touch-screen devices, which have a 4.2-inch display and resemble a scaled-down version of the PlayBook tablet, are being distributed today to developers at RIM’s BlackBerry Jam event in  Orlando ,  Florida . The prototypes lack the physical keyboard that has been a hallmark of most BlackBerrys. What we’re doing is giving them hardware they can build on, so they can feel confident that the work that they do, the behavior they see on their applications, will carry forward onto the launch hardware,” said Christopher Smith, a vice president in charge of handheld application platform and tools at Waterloo, Ontario-based  RIM. Groupon Bolsters Board With AmEx’s Henry, Deloitte’s Bass

Groupon Blosters said Daniel Henry, the finance chief of  American Express Co. (AXP) , and Robert Bass, a vice chairman of Deloitte LLP, will become directors, underscoring efforts to shore up investors’ confidence in its accounting. Henry was appointed on April 26 to replace  Starbucks Corp. (SBUX)  Chief Executive Officer Howard Schultz, who is departing. Bass will stand for election at the June 19 shareholder meeting. He will replace Kevin Efrusy, a partner at venture-capital firm  Accel Partners , who won’t stand for re-election. The new directors will serve on the  audit committee , Groupon said yesterday.
